How a fabric gets named

How a fabric gets named

Just in case you ever wondered...

Sometimes the name has an obvious source.  Something "Florida" like Manatee, Beachside, Sand Dune...

Sometimes it is not so obvious.

I am a family history specialist.  My specialty is Sicily,* as that is where all my ancestors are from.  And this is where a lot of my fabrics got their names.  This accounts for Margherita, Allegranza, Angirella, Antonina, Argenta, Eleonora, Faustina, Francesca, Giacoma, Lucia, Nicolina, Pasqua, Rosalia, etc. The 1500s had interesting names and most of these names are from back then.

Maura, Helena, Zoe, Tekla, Kassiani and others got their names from Saints.

Some names -- like Candela, Sonata, Viola -- are just Italian words; some are parts of the Divine Liturgy - Kontakion, Troparion, Vespers, Compline, etc.  Some are famous monasteries (Optina, Platina.)

And sometimes the color just reminds me of something... like Cinnamon Tea.

Naming the fabric is often the worst part.  It's always a good thing when a name comes to me quickly.  And now you know!
